- there should be some sort of default built-in role for non-logged in users that you can use to restrict things for them, such as downloading objects (so that for albums with pictures or videos or audio files they can only see the picture displayed (or watch the embedded audio/video file) but don't have the option to download it (or view the full-size picture or download the full-size picture)), etc.

Due to the open nature of the browser it is impossible to prevent users from downloading an object if they are looking at it in the browser. The following threads have more info.

What about removing the toolbar when a user is not logged in?

Well, we could do that, and it wouldn't even be that hard. But the toolbar has the useful slide show start/stop button, permalink, and show image metadata buttons. If anything, I could add a config setting that hides the download button for anonymous users. But all you have to do is right-click the image and choose Save As to defeat it, so it hardly seems worth the effort.

Remember that one option is to apply watermarks to all images unless you are logged on and a member of a role that has the "do not show watermarks" permission.

And there is also the config setting enableMediaObjectDownload that, when set to false, hides the download button as you request (but it does this for everyone).

Hey Roger,

I definitely agree that the toolbar has some useful functionality even if you are logged off, and you are totally right that all you have to do is right click and choose save as to download the file, but I'd like to at least be able to get rid of the hi-res image for non-logged in users while keeping it for logged in users (which means I can't fully remove the hi-res image because that would get rid of it for logged in users too). At least this way, a non hi-res image combined with watermarking would make it very hard for someone to steal our images for some sort of commercial purpose.

Any way to make another toolbar that doesn't have the view hi-res link in it and make it an option to display this toolbar for non-logged in users?

You know what would be another nice option. The ability to add a password to an album so that if you wanted to allow access to it to a select group of people, but didn't want to have to go through the trouble of creating permissions and accounts for them, you could just have a general album password and provide the album link and the password for access

If you want to allow logged on users to download the hi-res pic, but not anonymous users, look at the config setting allowAnonymousHiResViewing. Here is the description from the Admin Guide:

Quote:
Specifies whether anonymous users are allowed to view the original, uncompressed versions of images. When no compressed (optimized) version of an image exists, the user is allowed to view the original, regardless of this setting. This setting has no effect on non-image media objects or for logged on users.

As for your feature suggestion, I'll add it to the list. No promises it will be implemented, but it will be logged and periodically reviewed.
