So I cant open the admin or log in to add media
after completing the "add to existing site steps"



Is that normal ?

This simple use a ASPX web control is turning out to not be very simple

No, it is not normal. If you provide more details about exactly what is happening, I can help. For example, is there a javascript error? A network error? Use a tool like Firebug.
