is there a way to add a background to the gallery instead of it just being white?

Sure, just use CSS (or whatever technique you prefer) as desired. The background is currently set in default.aspx.

It is pretty easy as you can just make use of your style sheet or directly to your html implementation if you are not using any style implementation. That would be pretty easy and you just have to locate the file stated above and you are already good to go.
