I'm certainly not a fan of Apple. In fact, I haven't had much regard for the comapany for about 35 years now! But I'm less of a fan of software that does not work. I have not had FlowPlayer work correctly yet for one of my ".mov" files. These have been created from three different cameras. Since ".mov" is widely recognized as an Apple QuickTime file, I feel rather strongly that you should default to the QuickTime plug-in for these files. We shouldn't have to rename them to ".moov" or change the value of MimeTypeValue ourselves.

Thanks for your feedback. The QuickTime videos I have seen that do not work out of the box with GSP are those that use the legacy H.263 codec. The default codec for .mov files is currently - and has been for a few years - H.264, also known as MPEG-4 part 10. These should work just fine in GSP.

The trouble with using QuickTime for all .mov files is that it has a much lower install rate than Flash, and many users are in environments that do not allow the installation of plug-ins. Also, in my experience QuickTime has been buggy and difficult to deal with in a browser context.

As we have previously discussed, it is easy to revert to using QuickTime for .mov files with one of these changes: (1) Rename the file to .moov (2) Set MimeTypeValue to 'video/quicktime' for the .mov record in the table gs_MimeType, then recycle the app pool. I believe that, all things considered, this is a good compromise position.

Thanks again for sharing your thoughts. I appreciate it.

I am really keen to be able to allowing quicktime though I recognize the lack in technical gain as this appears to be a big problem on the side of the quicktime client and not on the implementation with GSP.

I hope that something true will be held by quicktime so that it could function flawlessly even with conjunction with the browsers.

I have learned a lot since I made this request. I would like to withdraw the request. Roger has helped me immensely and I have realized that there are a whole bunch of problems with QuickTime. The solution for me was to convert all ".mov" files to ".mp4" files using FFmpeg. (I actually used the GUI font-end "WinFF".) Life is much better not dealing with QuickTime at all.
