It would be good to be able receive notices when a user posts a new media object, or be able to moderate pictures by making them private or hidden until admins or moderators approve them.

I have heard those suggestions before, and I agree they would be useful. At the moment they are not scheduled for the 3.0 release, but if scheduling permits, I will try to get them in. Otherwise, they will be included in a later release.
