Can I point something to my pictures folder to share the whole thing, subfolders and all?

And does this import a copy of all of the pictures, or can the my pictures folder contain the original resolution only?

Also, if I delete/modify the pictures would that synch as well?

Those are the features I have with IIS Listpics.

Yes, you can point GSP to any directory, and then run the synch function, and everything in it will be imported. Any child directories are converted to albums.

By default, thumbnail and compressed versions are created in the same directory as the original images, but in your case you probably want to specify another directory for those (e.g. D:\mediacache\).

No copies of your original images are made.

If you delete/modify your files, you can run the synch function again and it will automatically notice any changes. At present there isn't an auto-synch function, so you have to run it manually.

Thanks.
When you say child directories are converted to albums, are those nested albums or are the directories "flattened"

Other features that I can't tell from the feature list if they exist or not:
full screen slide show
ability for viewer to order prints from any online store (like php gallery does)
ability to pick viewing size (640 - 800 - 1024 - 1280 - 1600 - original)
ability to control maximum resolution that can be downloaded anonymously (copyright control)

Albums are nested, just like the directory structure.

There is not currently a full screen slide show, nor is there integration into an online store, but both are features that are likely to come in the future.

All images have up to three sizes: small, medium, and the original image. You control how big you want the small (aka thumbnail) and medium (aka compressed) images as an administrator. Once created, they are "fixed" at this size unless you change the settings and re-synch.

I am curious - do you know if php gallery creates all those different versions on the hard drive (which takes a lot of space) or are created on-the-fly (which is terribly slow)? Or maybe it uses one large image and simply uses HTML width and height to control the size (which uses more bandwidth than necessary)?

You can control whether the original is available for download through an admin setting. If not available, the user can only download the small and medium versions. If desired, you can place certain users in a role to let them have access to the originals.

It's hard to tell what the full feature set of PHP Gallery is since each site is so customized.
The thing that I notice though is I usually just want to see the image at about the resolution of my screen. Full size is almost always too big and only really useful if you want to download an original. A "download original" button works well for that.
Flipping thoguh 640x480 versions until I find something I want to see, it's nice if there is a 1280x1024 version without having to get the gigantic version and scale it down every time.

I guess to me, it would be nice to have at least one extra size available, thumb, medium, large, full
I wouldn't want to make my medium version 1280 for those people who have slow internet. It really seems like there should be two sizes for main viewing.

For the full screen slide show, I would use the large version and scale that up or down. Even a large 1280x1024 image is a fraction the size of a 12MP image, and usually all people want to see anyway. They just want to see the picture fill their monitor when they click for the big version. I seriously doubt people want to see 1:1 pixels and view a 50" picture on a 19" monitor unless their checking focus quality, or retouching.

I appreciate the ear and hope my opinion is useful.

Thanks. I agree that more sizes would be useful.
