hi everyone,
First of all, thanks Roger for this nice application. I am in the process of doing some R&D for our company. I need ideas on how i can integrate galleryserverpro with a wap site so that mobile phones can be able to access it and play the videos. I have tried on two smartphones (an Iphone Touch and Nokia with a symbian OS) but they refuse to play the videos. on the Iphone, even though i can play videos on youtube, when i try accessing the site(galleryserverpro) I am told i need to download a higher version of flashplayer or at times it just asks you to download Microsoft Silverlight which is actually incompatible. anyone know how this can be done?

I know little about the web capabilities of smartphones, but I can describe how GSP renders media objects and maybe that will help.

The first thing to figure out is what kind of HTML (and perhaps plug-in) is required to play the video in the phone's browser. Some types of videos are never going to play because the browser can't do it and there isn't a plug-in for it.

Assuming you can come up with a snippet of HTML that will play a particular video, the next step is to create a HTML template in galleryserverpro.config that targets this HTML to a particular browser type. I can help you with this step. GSP uses ASP.NET's capability to sniff the browser type to send the desired HTML to the right browser.

Gallery Server Pro recognizes client browsers using the .browser files located in the machine-wide %SYSTEM%\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v2.0.50727\Config\Browsers directory. If your particular phone's browser isn't listed, you'll have to add it. I have never modified this file so you'll have to Google it rather than ask me. (If you are on .NET 4, modify the path accordingly. Note that .NET 4 includes updated browser files that include iPhone recognition, so you might have better luck using this version.)

Good luck.

Roger - I am also doing some R&D for an internal site. GSP seems to fit our needs very well - with one potentially slight requirement - it will need to play nice with iPhones and iPads. I did a little bit of quick research and saw that FlowPlayer has some options that are not Flash-based players. Do you happen to know if those flavors of FlowPlayer work with GSP?

Thanks very much

I don't know about those flavors of FlowPlayer, but one of the great things about GSP is the template approach it uses for rendering media objects in the browser. Read the section Rendering media objects in the browser in the Admin Guide.

.NET 4 has some built-in ability to detect iPhones and iPods - not sure about iPads. You can take advantage of this detection to send custom HTML to those devices.

Please share your experiences with us, especially if you come up with something you think should be incorporated into the core product.

Thanks Roger. I actually found some info yesterday on FlowPlayer's site. It seems like there's an option within their Javascript to have the player try Flash first, but if it can't run, it'll fallback to a version that is iOS friendly. Not sure if you want direct links here or not, but I just did a quick Google for flowplayer ipad and it took me right there.

Now I just need to get the time and help from the IT group to setup a server so we can test GSP and this alternate flavor of the flowplayer.js to see how it behaves.

Thanks so much for the quick reply. And for making GSP available!

This would be a super great feature enhancement for the GSP "wish list".
I more and more hear from clients that the biggest thing they feel is missing is video support for iPhones and iPads.
Theese days, seems like more folks want to hit video, before photos, and devices running iOS is more and more becoming how many users access the web.

I am happy to announce that video support is coming for iOS devices. I borrowed an iPod and got a video to play by rewriting the HTTP handler. Some work remains but look for this feature in the next release.

Unfortunately, I had to return the iPod and need to find another one for testing. If anyone can let me borrow an iPhone, iPod or iPad, I would appreciate it. For that matter, I could use an Android and Win Phone, too for testing...
